Trees don’t usually announce they’re about to fail. They just lean a bit more each winter. A few dead branches show up. You notice cracks after a storm but figure it’s fine. Then you wake up and there’s 5,000 pounds of valley oak blocking your driveway (or worse, sitting on your Subaru). That’s when people call us.
Deciding a tree needs removal isn’t straightforward. You’ve got a 40-year-old oak that’s been there longer than your house. We understand not wanting to lose it. But some trees hit a point where keeping them is gambling with your property and family. Waiting doesn’t make them safer.

Dead Trees Are Ticking Clocks
A dead tree is just waiting to fall. The wood gets brittle fast. Branches drop without wind or rain. The whole thing can snap at ground level during a decent storm.
Here’s what dead looks like. No leaves when there should be leaves (obvious but people miss it). Bark peeling off in big sheets. Mushrooms or shelf fungus growing at the base. Woodpeckers everywhere (they love dead wood). Branches that snap like pretzels.
Dead trees don’t come back. Get them out before they come down.
Severe Lean Means Failed Roots
Trees lean toward light. That’s normal. A little tilt isn’t a problem. But a sudden lean or anything past 15 degrees from straight up? That’s roots letting go.
Walk around to the side opposite the lean. Soil humping up or cracks in the ground means roots are already pulling out. That tree’s coming down. Just a matter of time.
We’ve seen trees in Folsom lean for three or four years. Then we get two days of heavy rain, soil turns to mud, and the tree’s over. Don’t be the person waiting for that.
Trunk Cracks and Hollow Sections
Vertical cracks running up the trunk are bad news. Cavities and hollow spots are worse. Trees can live with some rot (they’re tougher than you think). But past a certain point the remaining wood can’t hold the weight.
Grab a mallet and tap the trunk. Solid wood sounds solid. Rotten or hollow wood sounds…different. You’ll know. Anything past 30% of the trunk compromised and it’s done structurally.
Cracks going all the way through? Tree’s already splitting. Not if it fails. When.
Root Damage You Can't See
Roots do two jobs. They anchor the tree. They move water and nutrients. Damage either and the tree’s in trouble. You can’t dig down and look at roots (not practical). But you can spot symptoms.
Sudden wilting in summer when water’s fine. Canopy thinning on just one side. Roots sticking up that are cracked or cut. Construction or grading anywhere near the tree in the last five years (roots don’t recover from that). Trucks or equipment driving over the root zone and compacting soil.
Root rot spreads underground where you can’t see it. Mushrooms at the base mean it’s already too late. Those trees need removal before the next wind event.
Deadwood in the Canopy
One dead branch? Not a crisis. Ten dead branches scattered through the canopy? That tree’s dying.
Dead branches fall whenever they feel like it. We got called to a house in Roseville where a dead limb (big as a telephone pole, no exaggeration) dropped into the pool. No storm. Middle of a calm afternoon. Just gravity.
If a quarter of the canopy’s dead, that tree’s not recovering. Removal’s cheaper than a branch through your roof.
Disease and Pest Problems That Don't Get Better
Some diseases kill trees. Some pests finish them off. Either way, infected trees don’t recover. Treatment isn’t realistic for most of these.
Oak wilt kills fast. Leaves turn brown starting at the top. The tree can be dead in one season. We’ve seen it happen.
Bark beetles bore under the bark and kill the cambium layer. You’ll see piles of sawdust at the base and tiny exit holes in the bark. Tree’s done.
Sudden oak death is a fungus spreading through Northern California. Causes bleeding cankers on the trunk. Kills the tree in a few years (sometimes faster).
Root rot (Armillaria is the common one) destroys roots underground. Look for white fungal mats under the bark near ground level.
You can’t save these trees. You can protect the other trees on your property by removing the infected one.
Trees Planted Too Close
A healthy tree in a bad spot still causes problems.
Roots crack foundations. They invade sewer lines (expensive fix). Branches hang over the roof and dump leaves in your gutters twice a year. Limbs scrape your siding every time it’s windy. The shade keeps your roof damp and moss takes over.
We tell people 15-20 feet minimum between big trees and structures. Closer than that and you’re asking for it.
Your tree’s already damaging something or hitting the roof constantly? Removal beats pruning it every other year forever.
Wrong Species for Residential Lots
Some trees outgrow where they’re planted. That little sapling 20 years ago is now a monster oak with a canopy wider than your property. Or it’s blocking your view, your power lines, your solar panels (pick one).
Bradford pears grow fast and split apart in storms. Weak wood. Silver maples are the same. Eucalyptus drop huge branches without warning (we’ve seen them come down on calm days). Some species just don’t belong near houses.
Removing a healthy tree isn’t always about safety. Sometimes it’s just the wrong tree in the wrong place.
Multi-Trunk Trees That Split
Trees with multiple trunks look great. Then they split down the middle.
The attachment between trunks is weak. Bark gets trapped in there (called included bark). That’s your failure point. Wind, snow, or just time pulls one trunk away from the other.
We’ve cut multi-trunk oaks in Granite Bay that split and dropped half the tree on a fence. The other half was still standing there looking fine.
You can cable some of these trees. But the attachment’s already cracking? Or the tree’s massive? Just remove it.
Construction Damage Shows Up Later
Trees hate root disturbance. Trenching, grading, equipment driving around, soil compaction. All of it damages feeder roots within the drip line (that’s the area under the canopy).
The tree doesn’t die right away. It declines over two to five years. Leaves thin out. Growth slows. Then it dies or gets unstable and tips over.

Professional Assessment Means Climbing the Tree
We don’t assess from the ground. We climb up there and look at everything. Cracks, decay, bug damage, weak branch attachments. Canopy health. Branch structure. Fungal growth at the base and in the trunk.
On the ground we check soil conditions. Root flare visibility (you should be able to see where roots meet trunk). Lean angle. Soil movement. Proximity to your house, shed, power lines, whatever’s nearby. Risk level if it fails.
Then we tell you what we found. Needs removal, we’ll explain why. Pruning can buy you time, we’ll say that. Tree’s fine and you’re worrying about nothing? We’ll tell you that too.

Waiting Makes It Worse
People wait too long. They hope it’ll get better (it won’t). They don’t want to spend the money (understandable). They don’t want to lose the shade (we get it).
But dangerous trees get more dangerous with time. They don’t improve. And it finally comes down? You’re not just paying us for removal. You’re paying for whatever it landed on. Your roof. Your car. Your fence. Insurance deductibles. Weeks of hassle dealing with repairs.
Removing a questionable tree before it fails costs way less than cleaning up after it doesn’t.
